<p>We got to sit down wi<input id="apps" type="hidden" />th Australian developer &#70&#105&#114emint here at <a rel="nofollow" href="http://tuaw.com/tag/gdc2010">the Game Developers Conference 2010</a> &#105&#110&#32<s></s>San Francisco &#8212; it&#8217;s a mobile game developer who hit it big last year with the&#32&#118&#101ry popular iPhone game <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/flight-control/id306220440?mt=8">Flight Control</a>, and while it used to make mo<input id="stats" type="hidden" />bile games for just a h&#97&#110&#100ful of larger game publishers like EA, the company&#32&#105&#115 <input id="phpint" type="hidden" />now trying to cement a reputation for making a sm&#97&#108&#108er stable of high quality Ap<input id="apps" type="hidden" />p Store games. &#8220;We like to joke that&#32&#119&#101 went from ten customers to ten million,&#8221; community manager Alex&#97&#110&#100ra<input id="tracker" type="hidden" /> Peters told us.</p>
<p>She also showed us their second&#32&#103&#97me, <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-racing/id318366258?mt=8">Real Racing</a>, which has been winning all kinds of awards even in t<s></s>he crowded accelerome&#116&#101&#114 racing game genre, and talked with us both about &#70&#108&#105ght<input id="tracker" type="hidden" /> Control HD (their upcoming &#8220;soon after launch&#8221; title for the <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/ipad">iPad</a>) as well&#32&#97&#115 what&#8217;s next for the company.</p>
<p>Real Racing wa<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />s impressive for an &#105&#80&#104one racing game. While the accelerometer-as-steeri&#110&#103&#32is b<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />asically a cliche in iPhone games at this poin&#116&#44&#32Real Racing pulls it off pretty<input type="hidden" /> well by focusing o&#110&#32&#116hat &#8212; depending on the settings, you can simply let the car acce&#108&#101&#114ate a<input id="apps" type="hidden" />nd even break on its own, and just focus on h&#105&#116&#116ing the curves while driving 48 <input id="stats" type="hidden" />different cars aro&#117&#110&#100 the game&#8217;s 12 tracks, or actually jump in and control the car y&#111&#117&#114self.</p>
<p><input id="phpint" type="hidden" />We only got to drive a few laps, but the gam&#101&#8217;s crystal-cl&#101&#97&#114 presentation got us interested e<input id="stats" type="hidden" />nough to want to &#112&#108&#97y more. The game is <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-racing/id318366258?mt=8">currently $4.99</a> in the App Store, but there is an interesting lite ver&#115&#105&#111n to tr<input type="hidden" />y as well &#8212; Volkswagen actually approached Firemint after&#32&#116&#104e success of the game and commissi<s></s>oned an &#8220;adverware&#8221; version to release on th&#101&#32&#65pp Store. <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/real-racing-gti/id334366868?mt=8">It&#8217;s there to try</a> &#8212; unfortunately, the content is a little light for a game with so many ads, but it&#8217;s one of the better i&#110&#116&#101gration <input id="tracker" type="hidden" />models for in-game ads I&#8217;ve ever seen, and the extra com&#109&#105&#115sion for Firemint certainly help of<input id="apps" type="hidden" />fset the costs &#111&#102&#32development for a free game.</p>
<p>Firemint also told us&#32&#97&#98out the v<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />ersion of Flight Control they&#8217;re working on for the iPa&#100&#46&#32It will be called Flight Control HD,<input type="hidden" /> and of course&#32&#105&#116&#8217;ll make use of the bigger touchscreen, but like most developers&#44&#32&#70iremint ha<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />sn&#8217;t had an actual iPad dev device to work with &#8212; they&#8217;ve only got the game runnin&#103&#32&#105n the iPad SDK simulation. Peters sai<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />d the iPad ma&#107&#101&#115 for a &#8220;very personal and very immersive experience,&#8221; so they&#8217;re hoping to take advantage of&#32&#116&#104at with Fli<input id="apps" type="hidden" />ght Control HD &#8212; they&#8217;ve even set up a Wacom tablet to test the lar&#103&#101&#114 control scheme out. And they&#8217;re hoping the game com<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />es out soon &#97&#102&#116er the iPad&#8217;s launch on April 3rd, so look for it then.</p>
<p>Other th&#97&#110&#32that, Firemi<s></s>nt also has two other games in develop&#109&#101&#110t, still under wraps. The first will be<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> coming out&#32&#108&#97ter this year, and the other one is definitely the&#32&#98&#105ggest iPhone <s></s>project they&#8217;ve ever done (we got the impression th&#97&#116&#32it would be a larger, 3D action project)<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> that will&#32&#98&#101 out sometime in 2011. We asked them if those game&#115&#32&#119ere planned fo<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />r the iPhone or the iPad, and they t&#111&#108&#100 us while they were currently working on <s></s>both of t&#104&#101&#109 for the iPhone, &#8220;we&#8217;ll have to wait and see&#8221; on the iPad.</p>
<p>All in all, Firemint seems to be &#97&#32&#99ompany that has<s></s> really taken advantage of the oppo&#114&#116&#117nities in the App Store, and grown both th<input type="hidden" />eir repu&#116&#97&#116ion and their repetoire thanks to Apple&#8217;s platform. Flight Contr&#111&#108&#32and Real Racing <input type="hidden" />have both been excellent examples &#111&#102&#32their &#8220;just a few good games&#8221; philosophy, and we can&#8217;t wait to see what they do with <input id="counter" type="hidden" />other t&#105&#116&#108es and the iPad.

<div>&#84&#111&#110ight at <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tuaw.com/tag/gdc2010">GDC 2010</a>, I went o<input type="hidden" />ut and stopped by the Ca&#112&#99&#111m Fight Club party here in San Francisco, and whil&#101&#32&#116<s></s>here, Capcom projected the actual App Store interf&#97&#99&#101 for <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2010/02/16/street-fighter-iv-coming-to-iphone/">sending their Street F<input type="hidden" />ighter IV app</a> to the Ap&#112&#32&#83tore on various screens around the room. We actual&#108&#121&#32g<input id="stats" type="hidden" />ot to see them press the button on the release li&#118&#101&#32and in person, and sure enou<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />gh, the game is <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/street-fighter-iv/id354655665?mt=8">in the App Store right now</a> for $9.99.</p>
<p>Before y&#111&#117&#32go press buy, though, I&#8217;ll also tell you that I got a chance to &#112&#108&#97y <input id="phpint" type="hidden" />the game, and while it is about as faithful a St&#114&#101&#101t Fighter IV game as you can <input id="phpint" type="hidden" />get on the iPhone, pl&#97&#121&#105ng a fighting game without actual buttons is not r&#101&#97&#108ly <input type="hidden" />an ideal experience. While I was able to pull o&#102&#102&#32a Hadoken and almost all of th<input id="apps" type="hidden" />e other old moves af&#116&#101&#114 a few tries, the highest levels of competition in&#32&#97&#32figh<input id="stats" type="hidden" />ting game require precision and subtlety, and &#116&#104&#105s control scheme has neither of<input id="counter" type="hidden" /> those. If you just&#32&#119&#97nt to play Street Fighter on an iPhone, sure &#8212; be an early adopt&#101&#114&#44 pick<input id="phpint" type="hidden" /> up the game, and enjoy a few rounds of Guile&#32&#118&#115. Ryu. But if you&#8217;re looking for the kind of i<input id="apps" type="hidden" />n-depth fighting e&#120&#112&#101rience that Street Fighter IV on consoles and in t&#104&#101&#32arcade<input id="counter" type="hidden" />s offered, you probably won&#8217;t find it here &#8212; the controls are a little t&#111&#111&#32inconsistent to really dig into t<input id="counter" type="hidden" />he deep counter a&#110&#100&#32powerup systems on display.</p></div>
<p>The game does have a l&#111&#116&#32of extr<s></s>as and addons, including a dojo mode for tr&#97&#105&#110ing and Bluetooth multiplayer. And<input id="phpint" type="hidden" /> while the game&#8217;s eight charac&#116&#101&#114s offers up a pretty slim selection compared to th&#101&#32&#99urrent c<input id="apps" type="hidden" />onsole titles, these are definitely classi&#99&#32&#67apcom characters, and all of the ol<input id="stats" type="hidden" />d moves you&#8217;ll remember still&#32&#119&#111rk. Save for the controls, nothing about this game&#32&#105&#115 half-don<input id="counter" type="hidden" />e &#8212; it&#8217;s definitely a premium port of a premium game. But as a true f&#105&#103&#104ting game experience, this one comes<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> up short. Buy&#32&#105&#116 if you want, to see the spectacle of Street Fight&#101&#114&#32squeezed i<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />nto Apple&#8217;s touchscreen, an achievement in and of itse&#108&#102&#46 But don&#8217;t buy it expecting an ideal Capcom-style s<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />howdown that &#121&#111&#117&#8217;ll be able to pull up time and time again &#8212; for that, save your quarters for &#116&#104&#101 arcades.</p>
<p>S<input type="hidden" />tay tuned &#8212; we did get to talk with the Japanese prod&#117&#99&#101r of the game about what he thinks of <input id="stats" type="hidden" />the iPhone, &#116&#104&#101 iPad, and the challenges he had to overcome by sq&#117&#101&#101zing this on<input type="hidden" />e on to Apple&#8217;s handheld. It&#8217;s easier to churn out an eBook <input id="stats" type="hidden" />than a game app. Ther&#101&#32&#97re more free eBook than gaming apps, since many of&#32&#116&#104e e<input id="apps" type="hidden" />Books are out-of-copyright classics or collecti&#111&#110&#115 of free content; this lowers the cost o<input id="stats" type="hidden" />f development. Once &#97&#110&#32eBook engine is built it&#8217;s fairly trivial to use the framework f&#111&#114&#32anot<s></s>her book. Currently there are over 10 times mo&#114&#101&#32free eBook apps than paid ones.<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> It&#8217;s different in gaming where p&#97&#105&#100 apps outstrip free ones by over 2 to 1. </p>
<p>These eB&#111&#111&#107 apps<input type="hidden" /> will, of course, work on an iPad, but the Ap&#112&#108&#101 idea is to have you use one eBo<input id="counter" type="hidden" />ok reader and that&#32&#119&#111uld be <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/ibooks-what-we-know-of-the-ipads-ibook-app/">iBooks</a>. Jason Kincaid of <a rel="nofollow" href="http://techcrunch.com/2010/03/08/apple-app-store-books-ipad/">Techcrunch</a>, admitt&#101&#100&#108y with<input id="counter" type="hidden" /> no background evidence, posits that there m&#97&#121&#32be an eBook purge coming. It woul<input id="counter" type="hidden" />d be very un-Appl&#101&#32&#116o have an iPad owner searching for a copy of Treas&#117&#114&#101 Island<input id="counter" type="hidden" />, and letting them find over 25 apps with d&#105&#102&#102ering interfaces and many of them <input type="hidden" />free. </p>
<p>This coul&#100&#32&#98e confusing for new iPad owners, and more to the p&#111&#105&#110t, Apple<input id="apps" type="hidden" /> can&#8217;t monetize it. It doesn&#8217;t sound unreasonable that Apple will do w&#104&#97&#116ever it takes to make iBooks the eR<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />eader of choice&#32&#97&#116 the expense of the plethora of current eBook apps&#46&#32&#84hey will <s></s>be doing it in the name of providing a si&#109&#112&#108er and more enjoyable user experienc<input id="counter" type="hidden" />e, but of cour&#115&#101&#32you can&#8217;t pocket what you can&#8217;t sell. </p>
<p>It will be fascinating to watch the eBo&#111&#107&#32market abo<input id="stats" type="hidden" />ut two months from now, after the first &#105&#80&#97ds have been delivered, and to see wh<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />at Apple has &#112&#108&#97nned.</p>

I don&#8217;t usually use Bitt&#111&#114&#101nt, so I asked around for c<input id="stats" type="hidden" />lient suggestions; <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php">Transmission</a> s&#101&#101&#109s to be a favorite among several of my TUAW collea&#103&#117&#101s<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />.</p>
<p>I also remembered a tip from my friend <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.gesteves.com/">Guillerm&#111&#32&#69steves</a> (who did the awesome <a rel="nofollow" href="http://blog.gesteves.com/post/261593774/im-done-star-wars-opening-crawl-using-only-html"><input type="hidden" />Star Wars crawl using &#111&#110&#108y HTML and CSS)</a>, about <a rel="nofollow" href="http://blog.gesteves.com/post/84438959/start-bittorrent-downloads-remotely-with-dropbox">using Dropbox to start torr&#101&#110&#116s <input id="tracker" type="hidden" />remotely.</a> Guillermo provides some detailed instr&#117&#99&#116ions for Transmission and <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.utorrent.com/">&micro;Torrent</a> to set t<input id="apps" type="hidden" />hem up to &#8220;watch&#8221; a folder for new .torrent files&#44&#32&#119ith an important caveat to make sure that you don&#8217;t download the&#32&#102&#105les<input id="tracker" type="hidden" /> to your Dropbox.</p>
<p>One additional Transmission t&#105&#112&#58 be sure that you <em>un-check</em> the<input id="tracker" type="hidden" /> box next to &#8220;Display &#8216;adding transfer&#8217; options window&#8221; so that files will a&#117&#116&#111matically be added, and be sure to <em>check</em> the box n&#101&#120&#116 to <input id="stats" type="hidden" />the &#8220;Start transfers when added&#8221; option. Guillermo shows both of those set&#116&#105&#110gs in his screenshots, but it t<input type="hidden" />ook me a few minute&#115&#32&#116o figure out that I had them set incorrectly.</p>
<p>Then&#32&#73&#32asked<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> myself: &#8220;How can I be even lazier?&#8221; and I remembered <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.noodlesoft.com/hazel.php">Hazel</a>, a program fo&#114&#32&#97utomatically moving files from o<input id="stats" type="hidden" />ne folder to anoth&#101&#114&#32based on a set of predefined rules. So I added a H&#97&#122&#101l rule<s></s> for ~/Downloads/ which will move any file w&#104&#101&#114e &#8220;Kind is BitTorrent Document&#8221; to my ~/Dropbox/Torrents/ fol<input id="counter" type="hidden" />der. I repeated t&#104&#105&#115 on both my iMac and my MacBook Pro. Now I can be &#111&#110&#32my MacB<input id="apps" type="hidden" />ook Pro and download a torrent file to ~/Do&#119&#110&#108oads/ and have it moved to my Torr<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />ents folder, and&#32&#104&#97ve the torrent automatically start downloading on &#109&#121&#32iMac. So<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> when I&#8217;m done with my MacBook Pro I can just close it w&#105&#116&#104out having to worry about interrupt<input id="apps" type="hidden" />ing any of my d&#111&#119&#110loads.</p>
<p>You may have noticed that we&#8217;re big Dropbox fans around h&#101&#114&#101. <p><a rel="nofollow" href="http://unity3d.com/">Unity Te&#99&#104&#110ologies</a> hosted the sponsor<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />ed lunch panel during GD&#67&#32&#50010 today, and their &#8220;product evangelist&#8221; Tom Higgins gave a quick rundown of &#116&#104&#101<input id="counter" type="hidden" /> software platform that enables developers to <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.tuaw.com/2008/03/31/unity-engine-to-power-iphone-gaming/">asse&#109&#98&#108e and release games extreme<input id="apps" type="hidden" />ly quickly on multiple &#112&#108&#97tforms</a>. </p>
<p>The company was actually founded in Denma&#114&#107&#44 <input id="tracker" type="hidden" />but has since expanded around the world with just&#32&#116&#119o products: Unity Pro and Un<input type="hidden" />ity iPhone Pro. The se&#99&#111&#110d product, as you might imagine, allows developers&#32&#116&#111 p<input id="stats" type="hidden" />ut together an application that can then be expo&#114&#116&#101d out into an Xcode project a<input id="apps" type="hidden" />nd released on the Ap&#112&#32&#83tore. Higgins said that they&#8217;ve had over 90,000 people download &#116&#104&#101 so<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />ftware since it was released for free last fall&#44&#32&#97nd that more than 500 games in<input id="tracker" type="hidden" /> the App Store were &#97&#117&#116hored by Unity.</p>
<p>He also ran a short demo of the so&#102&#116&#119are <input id="stats" type="hidden" />at the panel. While some of the coding got a l&#105&#116&#116le technical (the system allows<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> you to create and &#99&#104&#97nge variables on in-game objects even while the ga&#109&#101&#32is ru<s></s>nning in the engine), the coolest feature was&#32&#116&#104e way they simulated iPhone cont<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />rols: by using a r&#101&#97&#108 iPhone as a remote. They&#8217;ve <a rel="nofollow" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=ju/1/ISREUg&offerid=146261.10000021&type=3&subid=0&RD_PARM1=http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/unity-remote/id305967442?mt=8">released a free app on the App Store</a> that will connect via Wi-Fi with a cop&#121&#32&#111f the <input id="phpint" type="hidden" />development tool running on your Mac, and as&#32&#121&#111u touch and turn the iPhone, the <input type="hidden" />editor reacts, an&#100&#32&#115ends the (slightly lower resolution) output to the&#32&#105&#80hone&#8217;s screen. You ca<input id="apps" type="hidden" />n also make changes to your code as the gam&#101&#32&#114uns in that mode, so you can be pl<input id="counter" type="hidden" />aying and coding&#32&#97&#116 the same time.</p>
<p>That was pretty impressive. Of cou&#114&#115&#101, Unity <input id="tracker" type="hidden" />won&#8217;t actually help you be a game developer &#8212; like many of the tools o&#110&#32&#100isplay at the conference this week,<input type="hidden" /> it&#8217;s a professional tool tha&#116&#32&#99an only make your ideas and art come to life, not &#97&#99&#116ually cre<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />ate them for you.</p>
<p>But when you combine Un&#105&#116&#121&#8217;s compatibility across platforms (there&#8217;s <a rel="nofollow" href="http://unity3d.com/webplayer/">even a web player</a> tha<s></s>t will play yo&#117&#114&#32Unity-created game on any web-compatible computer)&#32&#119&#105th the eas<s></s>e of development (the app just outputs a&#110&#32&#88code project, so you can write an app<input type="hidden" /> in Javascrip&#116&#32&#119ith the tool and output it straight to the App Sto&#114&#101&#44 or even ed<input id="stats" type="hidden" />it the Xcode after the output if you wa&#110&#116&#32to take advantage of features that Uni<s></s>ty doesn&#8217;t support by defa&#117&#108&#116), it&#8217;s definitely worth a look as an iPhone development tool. I&#8217;m not a devel&#111&#112&#101r, so I don&#8217;t have much in<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />sight on how the program actually work&#115&#44&#32but just in terms of creating apps for <input id="counter" type="hidden" />multiple pl&#97&#116&#102orms at the same time (&#8221;author once, deploy anywhere,&#8221; as Higgins said during &#104&#105&#115 talk), Unity<input id="counter" type="hidden" /> seems like a worthwhile solution.</p>
<p>Th&#101&#32&#85nity platform is <a rel="nofollow" href="http://unity3d.com/unity/download/">available as a free dow<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />nload</a>, and&#32&#116&#104e iPhone app either comes in source code with the &#114&#101&#115t of the platf<input type="hidden" />orm, or can be downloaded straight f&#114&#111&#109 the App Store.

Chen <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2010/03/ipad-apps/#ixzz0hgZFc0A3">noticed</a> that Apple&#8217;s iPad press rele<input type="hidden" />ase <a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2010/03/05ipad.html">touts</a> &#8220;12 new innovative apps desi&#103&#110&#101d especially for the iPad.&#8221; Take a look at the screenshot at rig&#104&#116&#32<input id="apps" type="hidden" />and you&#8217;ll see twelve apps: Videos, iPod, Maps, Photos, Mail, Sa&#102&#97&#114i, App Store, iTunes, YouTu<input id="stats" type="hidden" />be, Contacts, Calendar &#97&#110&#100 Notes. That means a few apps that ship with the i&#80&#104&#111n<input id="stats" type="hidden" />e &#8212; Stocks, Calculator, Clock, Weather and Voice Memos &#8212; are missing. </p>
<p>Thus, &#116&#104&#101 mystery begins. Where are T<input id="counter" type="hidden" />he Final Five? Chen su&#103&#103&#101sts that they&#8217;ll be released as free apps in the App Store. John&#32&#71&#114ub<input type="hidden" />er <a rel="nofollow" href="http://daringfireball.net/2010/03/iphone_apps_on_the_ipad">believes</a> that design problems caused the team&#32&#40&#115pecifically, Steve Jobs) to w<input type="hidden" />ithhold the apps. I a&#103&#114&#101e with John and Brian.</p>
<p>Consider the calculator app&#46&#32&#73t l<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />ooks great on the iPhone, as the iPhone is abou&#116&#32&#116he size of a pocket calculator<s></s>. If it were simply &#8220;blown up&#8221; to accommodate th&#101&#32&#105Pad&#8217;s screen, it would resemble one of those dollar store calcul&#97&#116&#111rs w<input id="counter" type="hidden" />ith the enormous buttons for older folks. Defi&#110&#105&#116ely not what Apple is after. Al<input id="tracker" type="hidden" />so, the press relea&#115&#101&#32says, &#8220;&#8230; designed <em>especially</em> for the iPad&#8221; (emphasis mine). The five missing apps haven&#8217;t yet received tha&#116&#32&#108oving<input type="hidden" /> attention, at least to Steve&#8217;s satisfaction.</p>
<p>As for gettin&#103&#32&#116hem on the iPad, I bet they&#8217;ll be a part of th<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />e next OS release &#97&#110&#100 in the App Store from then on. That way, Apple wo&#110&#8217;t be tied to&#32&#116&#104e OS w<input id="phpint" type="hidden" />henever they want to update those apps, and &#116&#104&#101y&#8217;ll have time between now and then to get them<input id="stats" type="hidden" /> just right.
